The importance of continuing research

In 2017, the UVic-UCC Faculty of Medicine was born with a determined international vocation and an innovative pedagogical model that places the patient at the center of the entire training process for doctors, dentists and audiologists alike. It aims to equip students with the sensitivity and the skills needed for research in the medical field already from undergraduate training.

The basic structure for the development of research activities, knowledge transfer and scientific dissemination carried out by the teaching staff of the Faculty of Medicine is carried out through the Research Groups and Chairs, following the organizational structure of UVic- UCC The research activity of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Medicine is carried out in the facilities at the different campuses of UVic-UCC, and in close connection with the care institutions of the territory with which the Faculty of Medicine has collaboration agreements so as to become a facilitator of the research and innovation ecosystem in the health and biomedical field.

In order to contribute to the improvement of the health and social system, the research activity of the Faculty of Medicine works to respond to the following challenges:

  • Medical education: to ensure constant adaptation of medical training to respond to the current and future needs of the population.
  • Organizational: eHealth (review and improvement of care models and services through the use of new technologies to move towards personalized medicine).
  • Social: aging and chronicity.
  • Economic/health management: increased pressure on public resources that put the sustainability of the system at risk.
  • Technological: design of new therapies and drugs to deal with diseases such as AIDS and related diseases, included those related to the aging of the population.

 

The Faculty of Medicine has drawn up a plan to boost research activity as one of the priority areas for the development of its teaching staff. This plan aims to generate knowledge that increases the visibility and notoriety of the academic activity in the medical field of  UVic-UCC and to develop cooperation agreements with healthcare institutions and companies in order to contribute to the transfer of knowledge, regional development, and national and international prestige.
