MIR preparation program

Graduació

We help you overcome major challenges

The MIR Preparation Program is a pioneering program that the UVic-UCC Faculty of Medicine launched in the 2020-2021 academic year and is carried out comprehensively from the first to sixth year. Its aim is to help students during the six years of the degree so as  to gain confidence, so once graduated and in the MIR exam preparation stage, they can do so with the upmost confidence.

Objectives of the program:

  • Train in exam technique
  • Accomplish the objectives with specific syllabuses, exams, seminars and tutorials
  • Give students confidence when taking the MIR exam
  • Integrate the UVic-UCC pedagogical model

The importance of MIR

The MIR exam (meaning Resident Internal Physician) is what allows access to medical specialization in Spain, and is currently the path that 90% of students decide to take when they finish their Degree. In the previous exams, it has had 210 questions, approximately half of which are in clinical case format, and some being based on images.

The MIR exam accounts for 90% of the final grade, and places the students  in a certain ranking among all those who have taken the exam, in order to qualify for the position they apply for (neurologist, surgeon, etc.), in addition it enables the student e to choose the center or institution where they would like to study this specialization.

At the Faculty of Medicine we want, in addition to passing the MIR, each of the students to reach their maximum potential so as  to be able to choose the desired position.

Characteristics of the program

Students gradually practice the multiple choice exam format , very similar to the MIR test. In this way, students get used to the type of questions and the reasoning they will have to apply in the MIR test.

The MIR preparation program includes the following activities which, although are scheduled within school hours, are non-compulsory and usually online.

MIR seminars: the specific examination technique of the MIR exam and the topics most frequently  asked in recent years at the MIR are worked on using real MIR questions from the subjects that are being studied throughout the degree. They take place from the third to the sixth year.

MIR mock: during the fifth year, a test with the same characteristics and under the same conditions as the MIR exams of previous years (with real questions from the last 5 MIRs) is carried out and a day of joint analysis of the results is held. The goal is to start individually preparing the most effective exam strategy.

Pre-MIR tutoring: During the sixth year, group and individual online sessions are held where aspects such as analysis and proposals to improve the MIR study and exam strategy are worked on.

In addition, the entire teaching team of the Degree has previous MIR questions over the last 5 years, so that they can  be used at their discretion during their teaching activities.

The teaching model applied by the Faculty of Medicine at UVic-UCC, is  based on the analysis of clinical cases and the interpretation of key data, approaches related to the changing model of the MIR, where more and more "vignette" questions are incorporated, in which the reasoning and clinical analysis of the student is requested and analyzed.

Coordination

The coordinator of the program is Irene Veganzones, professor at the UVic-UCC Faculty of Medicine. Graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona-Bellvitge, she specialized in family and community medicine and has worked for seven years as a tutor and teacher at the AMIR Academy, preparing for the entrance exam of specialized training. She is responsible for adapting the program year after year taking into account the changes that apply to the MIR, so that students are given the most up to date training with the utmost rigor.
